OLYMPICS: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION – John Williams

Olympics: A Centennial Celebration, arranged by John Moss, is a powerful tribute to 100 years of the modern Olympic Games. This exhilarating medley features some of the most iconic Olympic themes, including Leo Arnaud’s Bugler’s Dream and John Williams’ Olympic Fanfare and Theme, The Olympic Spirit, and Summon the Heroes. With soaring brass, driving rhythms, and triumphant melodies, the piece captures the energy, pageantry, and unity that define the Olympic spirit. It’s a stirring musical journey that honors both the history and hope of this global celebration of excellence.

Old Churches by Michael Colgrass is a meditative and atmospheric piece that evokes the quiet reverence of ancient sacred spaces. Inspired by the sound of Gregorian chant, the work uses free-flowing rhythms and subtle textures to create a sense of timelessness. With sections of improvisation and graphic notation, performers become part of a sonic landscape that mirrors the echoes of voices in stone-walled monasteries. The result is a haunting and reflective experience, inviting both performers and listeners into a world of stillness and spiritual depth.

The Inferno (from The Divine Comedy) by Robert W. Smith is a powerful and dramatic work for wind ensemble, inspired by the first part of Dante Alighieri’s epic poem The Divine Comedy. In this movement, Smith musically depicts the descent into Dante’s vision of Hell—a realm of darkness, chaos, and eternal punishment.

Opening with intense, ominous themes, the piece takes listeners through the gates of Hell, marked by driving rhythms, dissonant harmonies, and a relentless sense of motion. Each section portrays different levels of torment, reflecting the vivid imagery and emotional depth of Dante’s literary masterpiece. The music is filled with contrasting moods—from violent fury to eerie stillness—mirroring the complexity of the souls condemned to eternal suffering.

With its cinematic scope and bold instrumentation, The Inferno challenges performers and immerses audiences in a gripping, unforgettable musical journey through one of literature’s most haunting landscapes.
